News 25 Game of the Week Preview: East Central vs. Picayune

Week six of the high school football season is upon us and so is district play. That makes the ‘News 25 Game of the Week’ extra important for more reasons than one.

Tonight’s match-up between East Central and visiting Picayune is shaping up to be one of the most prolific offensive showcases on the Gulf Coast this season.

Both teams are averaging more than 49 points per game and appear to be serious contenders in region 4 class 5A.

If that’s not enough, Maroon Tide Head Coach Dodd Lee is the father-in-law to Hornet’s Head Man Seth Smith.

Albeit a house divided, the players from both sides have nothing, but mutual respect for the opposition. Picayune Offensive/Defensive Lineman Deonta Reed said, “A lot of teams – we don’t ever play ourselves. A lot of teams focus a lot more on finesse ball with the spread, but we get a taste of our own medicine.”

Picayune Full Back/Free Safety/ Inside Linebacker Kade Turnage said, “East Central is a really good team. We know that. Coaches preach on it. And they’re pretty much just like us, running it. We’ve just got to match their energy and bring it better than they do.”

East Central Running Back Teshun McGee said, “Overall, they’re pretty good. Defense, pretty good. Offense, pretty good. I mean every player on the team does their job. Hit the holes. Linebackers crashing down. They’re just a pretty good team.”

East Central Running Back Dylan Grinsteinner said, “We play every game like it’s a championship game, every play as hard as we can. Go into every game with the right attitude and hopefully we come out with the right outcome at the end. And if we just don’t beat ourselves and play Hornet football, then we might have a chance.”

The News 25 Game of the Week kicks off at 7 tonight from Hurley. Highlights on WXXV at 9 and 10.
