New Orleans Saints draft day preview
For the first time since 2012, the New Orleans Saints don’t have a first round pick in the upcoming NFL Draft as a result of last year’s trade with the Green Bay Packers to acquire Marcus Davenport. That means the black and gold won’t be on the clock until Friday.
Which comes as a little bit of a downer following an extremely active free agency period where the Saints brought in some big time names like Jared Cook and Latavius Murray to complement the re-signings of Wil Lutz and Teddy Bridgewater.
Considering New Orleans has hit on recent first round picks Michael Thomas and Marshon Lattimore, there’s not as much buzz surrounding the 2019 draft.
But look no further than third-round selection Alvin Kamara, 2017 offensive rookie of the year, as to what’s to come starting Friday. Saints Head Coach Sean Payton said, “It’s more noticeable to the public when the first round pick is not there because look, we spend 90 percent of our time discussing the first round. And yet our scouts, everyone knows in this process, the key to having a good draft is finding players in these other rounds which we’ve been able to do and hopefully we can do that beginning Friday.”
For the first time ever, this year’s draft will be held in Nashville, Tennessee with the first round starting at 7 p.m. tomorrow.
The Saints are reportedly picking up a fifth-year option on Sheldon Rankins while the young defensive tackle continues to recover from an Achilles injury.
