New Harrison County waste services making it easier to recycle

Did you know only about five percent of Harrison County residents recycle?
That’s according to the Harrison County Utility Authority who are trying to raise that number with the start of a new garbage trash and recycling services contract. County officials and officials from Pelican Waste and Team Waste were discussing the changes that come with the new contract at a luncheon in Gulfport today.
One of the bigger changes with the new services is that Team Waste will only be picking up garbage and recycling once a week. Harrison County Utility Authority Executive Director Donald Scharr said, “We’re also trying to emphasize and improve recycle participation so we’re making it easier to recycle by providing recycle carts and we’re kicking off an education campaign to better inform the people of what can and cannot be recycled and certainly promote the benefits of recycling.”
The City of Gulfport has submitted paperwork to break away from the new waste services agreement. Utility board members tell News 25 there still hasn’t been an official move regarding Gulfport’s withdrawal.
