Need for blood donations grows during severe weather events
The South Mississippi Chapter of the American Red Cross is asking the public to donate blood, especially during this hurricane and severe weather season for South Mississippi.
This week, the Media for Red Cross drives have been taking place across the Coast. Those who donate blood this week receive a t-shirt and a $15 gift card.
Denise Smith with the American Red Cross came to the WXXV studio to expand on the need for blood during major weather events. “Unfortunately, because summer time is when there is a shortage and we in the south and East Coast have to deal with hurricanes and think about that. It makes it more important when we aren’t going through hurricanes to come out and give. Media for Red Cross has typically been kind of our kickoff to summer, trying to make sure we fill up enough units so that they are there in the blood supply.”
The American Red Cross continues to host blood drives Friday. Memorial Biloxi is the site starting at 9 a.m. Mandal Buick GMC in D’Iberville will be hosting a drive at noon as well to wrap up this year’s series of blood drives.
