National Human Trafficking Awareness

You might have noticed more people wearing blue that’s because January 11th is National Human Trafficking Awareness Day.
Human trafficking affects 12 to 27 million men, women, and children worldwide according to the Mississippi State Department. Canopy, an organization on the Coast, is dedicated to fighting human trafficking here in South Mississippi.
Officials tell News 25 it’s important for people to know that human trafficking is not foreign to the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Canopy Regional Director Karen Simmons said, “Human trafficking is all around us in many different forms and fashion. Human trafficking can occur because a family decides their substance abuse is more important to them than their young child and so they make a deal for their young child for drugs.”
If you suspect human trafficking call the national hotline at 888-373-7888 or contact your local police department.
