MWGA State Championships
For the first time in the history of Mississippi Women’s Golf Association Amateur Championships, Gautier’s Shell Landing is playing host to the 85th annual event.
Today was the second day of match play after a qualifying period Monday, setting the stage for tomorrow’s championship. Sixty-one golfers are participating in this year’s tournament including four past winners.
Two of them are actually related, those being mother Cissye Gallagher and daughter Kathleen. Combined, they’ve taken home the trophy 14 times and even though both of them fell short this year, the family tradition outweighs the scorecard. Amateur Golfer Cissye Gallagher said, “Oh, it’s wonderful. It’s a game we enjoy, and I would encourage every family to if they have the opportunity to spend some time on the golf course. You learn a lot and you have a lot of time to be together and enjoy each other. And so, we’ve enjoyed that for years.”
LSU Golfer Kathleen Gallagher said, “I think just that my mom has won it 12 times, that’s something that like we look up to. We think it’s awesome. The State Am means a lot to us, the tournament, the title of being a champion of your state. I think it’s incredible. It’s a wonderful accomplishment and it just really does mean a lot.”
“Golf Digest” just recently ranked Shell Landing as the sixth best golf course in the state of Mississippi.
