The best men’s and women’s college basketball teams in the state of Mississippi both reside in Starkville.
A big reason for that is the best men’s and women’s college basketball players in the state of Mississippi both reside in Starkville.
Starting with the Howell Trophy, given to the best men’s player in the Magnolia State each year, going to MSU’s Quinndary Weatherspoon. He takes home the hardware for the second straight year over other finalists Breein Tyree from Ole Miss and Cortez Edwards from Southern Miss.
This season, Weatherspoon led the Bulldogs to a first round-bye in the SEC Tournament as the league’s second leading scorer at more than 18 points per game.
Weatherspoon says he’s honored to keep the award in the Bulldog family. “It hit me the other night, Saturday night at the senior day. But winning this award knowing that Bailey Howell, one of the greatest players to play at Mississippi State, and for me to come in and be able to win it, it’s a big accomplishment for me.”
Weatherspoon will lead his Bulldogs in the SEC Tournament as the number six seed against the winner of Texas A&M and Vanderbilt in Thursday’s second round game.
