MSDH holds press conference as COVID cases continue to rise

The Mississippi State Department of Health held a news conference today about updates on COVID-19.

Cases continue to rise in Mississippi. Today marks the largest increase in positive cases since January 29th.

The increase comes from the delta variant which makes up about 90 percent of all COVID-19 cases. As of today, only 34 percent of the Mississippi population has been vaccinated.

Ninety-five percent of the new cases are of unvaccinated individuals with 88 percent of hospitalizations being unvaccinated as well.

State epidemiologist Dr. Paul Byers says the department is now concerned with rising cases amongst the youth attending school. “Those parents continue mask use for their children, even if it’s not required by your school district. I would certainly use a mask for your children who are not eligible for vaccination. I think that is going to be the best protection.”

The MSDH continues to recommend all residents to wear a mask indoors regardless of vaccination status.
