Motorcycle driver killed in Jackson County wreck

A fatal accident between an 18-wheeler and a motorcycle halted traffic for hours this morning on the interstate in Jackson County.
News 25’s Laurene Callander has the details from the scene.
It was a traffic nightmare and tragedy on the roadway this morning after a fatal accident on the interstate near Exit 50 for Ocean Springs. An 18-wheeler was traveling westbound on the interstate just before 6 Thursday morning when it hit a pole. The 18-wheeler continued to cross over the median into the eastbound lanes, then struck a motorcycle.
The driver of the motorcycle was confirmed dead on the scene this morning on the interstate, causing east and west bound lanes to completely shut down to all traffic. The pole that fell on the westbound side caused an additional two accidents with two different vehicles. No one was injured in those accidents.
Traffic was diverted onto Exit 50 on Washington Avenue in Ocean Springs causing major traffic delays all morning. There were dozens of first responders, law enforcement officials, as well as environmental quality officials on the scene trying to work together to clear the fatal accident.
Chase Elkins with Mississippi Highway Patrol said, “There are so many different entities involved in this accident scene together. DEQ is out here, you know, everyone came together to work as a team, as one team, to get the scene clear as quick as it was clear.”
Westbound lanes on the interstate opened around 7 in the morning. However, it took eastbound lanes longer to open because diesel fuel spilled on the roadway from the 18 wheeler.
