Mobile pushes back Amtrak vote

Our Coast has been inching closer and making efforts to bring an Amtrak system back that would run through our area connecting Mobile and New Orleans.

Yesterday at Mobile’s City Council meeting the vote was pushed yet again. They have set the vote for February 4th, just one day before the federal deadline.

Plenty of Mobile citizens showed their support at the meeting. The city council’s reasoning for the push back is that they wanted more time to understand how the city would allot the money.

The City of Biloxi says this push back will not stop them from moving forward with plans for the project.

The Biloxi City Council is set to vote within the next few meetings to construct a $400,000 passenger platform for Amtrak. Biloxi Public Affairs Specialist Cecilia Dobbs Walton said, “Mayor Gilich has reached out to people over in Mobile. As I know with some of the citizens in Biloxi have done the same thing and reached out. So, to hear that Mobile City Council has pushed it back again, the City of Biloxi is not letting that interfere with the City of Biloxi’s plans.”

If built there would be stops on the Coast in Bay St. Louis, Biloxi, Gulfport, and Pascagoula. If all goes according to plan, the Amtrak system will be a-go in 2023.
