MLK Coastwide Celebration
It’s that time of year to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
South Mississippi has a full lineup including annual events like the battle of the bands at MGM Park which is set to take place on Monday, January 21st at 10 a.m.
Prior to that, the Civil Rights pioneer and icon James Meredith will serve as the keynote speaker on Sunday, January 20th at the Biloxi Civic Center starting at 4 p.m. in an event hosted by Biloxi Councilman Felix Gines. The event is free and open to the public. Allytra Perryman with MLK Coastwide said, “It was in the 60s. A lot of children don’t realize how close our history is to us. It’s important that we remind people about our history so we can understand our past and where we go in the future and to encourage everyone to be the best person they can be and to continue the legacy of love and equality and justice for everyone.”
The MLK Coastwide activities will kick off Friday, January 18th with an MLK Gospel Concert, paying tribute to the late Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin, followed by an old school party themed fundraiser.
On Saturday, at 10 a.m., the public is invited to attend a free village social justice symposium at USM’s Gulf Park Campus in Long Beach featuring a health care summit, a youth summit, and man 2 man summit.
