Mississippi unemployment claims remain high during pandemic

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – Mississippi processed fewer unemployment claims last week than the week before, but the state is still seeing dramatically more claims than usual as businesses struggle during the coronavirus pandemic.

A federal agency says Thursday that Mississippi processed 201,890 claims for unemployment benefits between March 14 and the week that ended Saturday.

More than 35,800 of those were made during the most recent week of the period, down 3% from the week before. The U.S. is seeing its highest unemployment since the Great Depression.

The state Health Department says Mississippi has more than 6,800 confirmed cases of the coronavirus and at least 260 deaths from it.
