Mississippi State Flag Removed at DNC
The Mississippi state flag has not received such a warm welcome at the Democratic National Convention.
About 50 Bernie Sanders supporters took to the streets of Philadelphia before the convention got underway, sitting in the roadway until city officials agreed to remove Mississippi’s state flag.
The flag includes the Confederate battle emblem and has been a continuing source of controversy. Philadelphia’s First Deputy Managing Director Brian Abernathy says Mississippi’s flag and another one nearby were removed Monday where the flags of all 50 states were flying from light poles in the area.
Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross said, “And there’s a Confederate flag there and there was a small group that wanted the flag down and they sat in the street.”
Abernathy said, “So to reiterate, we have received several complaints about the Mississippi flag as a whole. The city will be taking the flag down this evening.”
Mississippi is the only state with a flag that still includes the controversial emblem.
