Mississippi shrimp season is underway
The Mississippi shrimp season is now underway and local shrimpers in the area experienced a low haul on the first day.
Local shrimper Van Pham says he caught around 40 pounds of shrimp on his first time out this season and noted that wind direction and higher levels of freshwater in the area have contributed to lower numbers.
Additionally, white shrimp are turning out to be larger and more prevalent than brown shrimp this season. “We have seen some white shrimp, but not brown shrimp. Brown shrimp are kind of small, over 100 for one pound.”
The current commercial shrimp season will close next year on January 1st in areas north of the intracoastal waterway and on May 1st for areas south of the waterway and Gulfport ship channel.
