Mississippi Showing More Support For Mandatory Kindergarten

According to one local representative, the Magnolia State is moving closer toward mandatory Kindergarten.
Sonya Williams Barnes has been pushing for mandatory kindergarten ever since she was elected four years ago:
Barnes stands behind the research, which shows attending kindergarten decreases illiteracy and increases the number of children graduating with a high school diploma.
While the bill to make kindergarten mandatory died this session, Barnes says it got more support than ever before and she is hopeful for it next session: “I feel very strongly that our state as a whole is going to get it and that we’re going to make sure that our 5 year olds are mandated to be in a classroom so that they can begin learning at a very early age.”
Currently, only 16 states require 5 year olds to attend kindergarten.
