Mississippi Severe Weather Preparedness Week

Mississippi has been no stranger to severe weather in the last few years and weather officials say 2020 won’t be any different.

The upcoming spring months are expected to be an active time for severe weather so Governor Tate Reeves declared the next five days as ‘Severe Weather Preparedness Week’ across the state.

Today’s focus is on flash flooding. As severe flooding continues to affect residents in Jackson and water levels continue to rise in the Pearl River, Harrison County Emergency Management Director Rupert Lacy says South Mississippi should be prepared in the case of any flooding emergency. “If you live in a flood prone area, we always encourage you to have flood insurance. Regular home owners insurance doesn’t cover you for rising water. So, as we transition seasons, it’s always a good time to check those policies to make sure those things are ready.”

Lacy also recommends everyone pay attention as advisories come out. Advisories can lead to watches and watches can lead to warnings.
