Mississippi Senior Olympics begins in D’Iberville

Over the next two months, almost 500 Mississippi seniors will compete in the 2019 Mississippi Senior Olympics. Competitors from across the state will gather all along the Coast for over 20 sporting events.

You won’t find the rails up here, the individual bowling matches officially kicked off the 2019 Mississippi Senior Olympic Games at Cypress Lanes in D’Iberville. Competitor Albert Hutchinson said, “Oh well, it’s almost as good as bingo. I like to bowl twice, two leagues on Tuesday and each week.”

Bowling is just one of the 23 events held in the Senior Olympic Games and has quickly become a favorite among competitors. Cecilia Dobbs-Walton with City of Biloxi said, “People seems to enjoy it. They enjoy being a part of it. Whenever people are checking in, they’re getting ready with all of their gear. They’re polishing their balls, they’re practicing, stretching and getting ready. It’s a fun, but important event.”

That importance is echoed in the mission statement of the Mississippi Senior Olympics which focuses on enhancing the quality of life for older adults. “It promotes a healthy lifestyle for all adults, especially ages 50 and older. Having a healthy and active lifestyle will help you enjoy your life more, enjoy sports more, and live longer.”

One thing that doesn’t seem to go away with age is that competitive spirit that comes with stiff competition. Competitor Lawrence Hanson said, “My game plan was I was going to come out there and I was going to win. I practiced in the practice lane. I was doing pretty good, got three or four trikes, but then when they turned the lights on and all of this kind of stuff, it changed the lanes on us.”

With bragging rights and hardware on the line, don’t expect that attitude to change anytime soon. Games continue this week with shuffleboard and badminton with an opening ceremony set for Friday, March 29th at Point Cadet Plaza in Biloxi.
