Mississippi Power shares energy-saving tips to beat the summer heat

As the summer heat persists, Mississippi Power is encouraging customers to take simple steps to keep their homes cool, improve energy efficiency, and help manage higher electric bills.

The summer heat has air conditioners working overtime as they keep homes cool during some of the hottest days of the year.

Mississippi Power says a few simple habits can help cooling systems run more efficiently, including changing air filters monthly, keeping outdoor units clear of debris, and scheduling annual HVAC maintenance.

The company also recommends using ceiling fans, closing blinds and curtains during the day, and setting your thermostat to the highest comfortable temperature to help reduce energy use while also supporting a healthier environment. Mississippi Power Representative Kaila Moran said, “We know this time of year is where your bill may start to increase a little bit. Y’all are using a lot of energy because it is really hot outside and ‘my power usage’ is a great tool. It shows exactly where that energy usage is going. More than 50% of your household’s energy is more than likely coming from your a/c or heating system. So, making sure that it’s running efficiently is key. ‘My power usage’ will allow you to do a home energy check up on our website as well. It will say this is where your energy is and these are some tips to help manage your energy to lower your power bill.”
