Mississippi lawmakers resolve budget for Department of Marine Resources

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – The Mississippi Legislature has set a budget for the state Department of Marine Resources.

The House and Senate voted on Monday, weeks after the state budget year started on July 1.

House and Senate negotiators resolved a conflict that had put the department’s entire budget on hold – a plan for spending $46 million in federal money that Mississippi receives for oil and gas leases in the Gulf of Mexico.

Legislators will split the spending power between themselves and the governor.

The department had warned that employees could be furloughed if the budget were not resolved by Sept. 1.
