Mississippi jobless claims tough to file as virus increases demand

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – The Mississippi agency that handles unemployment claims is getting 10 times the usual number of phone calls as people seek help amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Jackie Turner is executive director of the Mississippi Department of Employment Security. She says the center is receiving 6,000 calls a day — up from 600 — and phone lines are jammed.
The state Health Department said Thursday that Mississippi has more than 480 confirmed cases of the coronavirus. Testing remains limited, so most people now spreading the virus may not know they’ve been infected.
