Mississippi House Speaker Calls for Lucedale Lawmaker to Resign if Assault Allegations are True

One of the state’s top lawmakers is calling for a South Mississippi state representative to resign if allegations of domestic violence are true.

Mississippi House Speaker Philip Gunn issued a statement Tuesday about the allegations against Republican State Representative Doug McLeod as quote “unacceptable.”

Gunn’s response came after the Lucedale lawmaker’s recent arrest Saturday night on an assault charge.

According to our media partner, the Sun Herald, the investigative report by the George County Sheriff’s Department alleges McLeod punched his wife in the face because she undressed too slowly for sex.

McLeod is free on bail and has not yet responded to media requests for comment in this case.

McLeod has represented George and Stone counties since 2012 and is unopposed for re-election this year.
