If there had to be defining theme for this year’s presidential election it would have to be ‘expect the unexpected’ and election night was no different. Dozens gathered at the Governor Phil Bryant watch party in Jackson, Mississippi. The crowd cheered loudly as Donald Trump swept many states, including Mississippi.
Bryant says a win for Donald Trump is ultimately a win for Mississippi. “I think the year of the presidency, I think the ability to be able to go directly into the oval office with the concerns we have here in Mississippi.”
After publicly supporting and campaigning for Trump throughout the election, Governor Bryant was asked whether or not he would consider joining the Trump administration. “I played a minor part actually I think in the grand scheme of things, but we will see what the president has to say. It’s not something I’ll be applying for.”
With a Trump-led administration and a Republican majority in the House and Senate, officials say Trump’s victory is the start of a new voice for the Republican Party. Mississippi State Treasure Lynn Fitch said, “We have such great opportunities ahead of us to bring in conservative values and principles and jump start the economy with new ideas and new processes and new thoughts.”
