Mississippi Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo Starts Thursday

A standing tradition in South Mississippi and a place where fishing records are broken every year.

Starting Thursday, the waters will be filled once again for the start of the 72nd annual Mississippi Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo. Headquarters are at the Barksdale Pavillion in Jones Park in Gulfport.

A midway is being set up with rides and food vendors at the family-friendly event that runs July 4-7.

Mississippi Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo Vice President Donnie Armes said the first person who brings a fish in to the scales after they open at noon on Thursday will receive a special prize. There also is a prize for the biggest bull shark that is brought in by a registered fisherman. $25,000 is at stake for the bull shark. Fishermen who wish to try for the prize must be registered by midnight Wednesday.

There also is a $500 prize, sponsored by Fairley Tire, for the person who brings in a stingray that breaks the existing record.
