Mississippi Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo canceled

The Mississippi Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo, scheduled for the July 2-5 in Jones Park, has been canceled because of concerns over COVID-19, organizers said.

Richie Valdez, president of the organization, announced Tuesday morning that the annual fishing tournament was cancelled. The MDSFR Facebook page proclaims the tournament, which ran for 72 years without interruption, would return in 2021.

The Fishing Rodeo is typically a four-day event with multiple categories including salt and fresh water. More than $40,000 in cash and prizes were being offered for top fish. Carnival rides and food booths also were set up.

The Fishing Rodeo has been going on for the last 72 years, and ran in 2019 despite fishermen’s concerns with an algae bloom.

But the need to social distance caused organizers to act on the side of caution and cancel the 73rd year.

The Fishing Rodeo attracts an average of 50,000 people every year.
