Military Affairs Breakfast

This morning Retired Rear Admiral Mark Buzby, the U.S. Maritime administrator, stopped by the Great Southern Club in Gulfport to share some vital information about water borne transportation with local business leaders.

The Maritime Administrator promotes the use of transportation by water and its seamless integration with other segments of the transportation system and the viability of the U.S. Merchant Marine.

Buzby says he also wants to inform people on the shrinking U.S. Merchant Marine fleets.

The once mighty U.S. Merchant Marine fleet has nearly collapsed under the weight of high labor costs, zigzagging federal policies, and intense competition from abroad. “It’s not well understood by most people, including people in the military, that our armed forces move in commercial ships manned by commercial merchant mariners. Most people think everybody just jumps in the back of an airplane and goes to war and while a very small number do go that way the majority of forces deploy and then are sustained by ships.”
