Michael Gilbert update: three years since former Harrison Central standout’s head injury
Three years ago today, Michael Gilbert’s life changed forever when he incurred a severe head injury prior to his senior season with the Southern Miss baseball team. These days, it’s all coming full circle for the one they call Gilly.
The Saucier native is currently attending the University of Mississippi Medical School, the same place he was treated immediately following the incident. Gilbert later tore his ACL and still returned to the diamond for his final go-round at USM.
Both a Harrison Central and Mississippi Gulf Coast alum, Gilbert tells News 25 he’s been on a special recovery journey ever since. He says, “I’ve had a lot of people in my life, especially my parents and people all throughout the community, help me along the way. Wouldn’t be here without them. I definitely miss playing baseball at Southern Miss.”
