MHSAA Soccer State Championships Preview: Long Beach Lady Bearcats
Of the eight boys and girls soccer teams representing the South in Saturday’s state championship games, half of them hail from the Gulf Coast.
In class 5A both Long Beach teams are vying for a title. Ever since their three year run at the crown from 2005 to 2007, the Long Beach girls team has been left out of the state championship picture, but this year the Lady Bearcats are framing their own destiny with the chance to capture the first title in school history.
It’s something they’ve been preparing for all season long, entering Saturday’s game versus Germantown with an undefeated record of 20-0-1.
Head Coach Neil Scott says their time is now. “Yeah, we knew from the end of last season that we were having a strong team this coming year. We had high expectations, we’ve literally got a goals checklist in our locker room. State Championship is obviously a goal, we don’t think that’s too high of an expectation. It’s not always an expectation, sometimes it’s wishful thinking. But with this team it’s something that we think we’re capable of.”
Long Beach right back Lauren Bennett said, “Winning it for Long Beach, like Long Beach girls soccer has never won a state championship. So like winning that for Long Beach is going to be like a big, good feeling for us and like a good push for the next years.”
Long Beach and Germantown square off from Brandon at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
