MGCCC Football: Jackie Matthews commits to West Virginia

The state’s top junior college defensive back has a new place to call home following next month’s national championship game.

Yesterday, Mississippi Gulf Coast sophomore Jackie Matthews gave his verbal pledge to West Virginia, his only Power 5 offer.

The MACJC Defensive Back MVP and All Region 23 recipient picked the Mountaineers over the likes of Central Florida, Old Dominion, Western Kentucky, UAB, Marshall, Coastal Carolina, and Arkansas State.

A three star prospect according to 24/7Sports, Matthews leads the Bulldogs with five interceptions to go along with 49 tackles.

Humble as they come, he says all the credit goes to Head Coach Jack Wright, his teammates, and pretty much everyone but him. “It means a lot coming from him because out of high school I wasn’t getting recruited as much and he was one of the first people to ever take a chance on me. But it’s bigger than me. I think it’s my team and my coaches, the position they put me in to get these offers. I want to thank them for it.”

Matthew says his favorite NFL defensive back is Patrick Peterson, hailing from LSU.
