Merit Health Biloxi hosts blood drive in fight against national blood shortage

To help continue fighting the blood shortage, Merit Health Biloxi partnered with the Life South Community Blood Center to host a blood drive.

More than 50 donors came to the drive to give blood at the event.

Life South Community Blood Center District Director Marty Pittman says while the drive was a great success, she hopes donors will continue to show up for these events.

According to Pittman, one donation can save up to three lives. She says with the help of the numerous incentives, such as free Krispy Kreme donuts, she has noticed a slight increase in donations recently. “So, I think that this probably is one of the most important things you can do in your life is to be a regular blood donor because every six seconds people need – I mean there are so many people who need blood all the time, and it’s just not something that we think about on a regular basis unless this is what you do.”

While the blood crisis is still happening, less than five percent of the eligible donor population donates blood.
