MDMR urges boating safety as summer season brings increased traffic on Gulf Coast waters

With Memorial Day behind us and summer officially underway for many families, more people are heading out on the water along the Gulf Coast.

The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources is reminding boaters to put safety first before leaving the dock.

As temperatures rise and boating traffic increases, officials with the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources say preparation can make all the difference on the water.

DMR staff recommend boaters to check weather conditions before heading out, file a float plan with family or friends, and make sure emergency equipment like flares, fire extinguishers, and radios are working properly.

Officials also say operators should avoid distractions, stay alert for other vessels, and swimmers, and never boat under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

A few extra safety precautions can help make sure everyone enjoys safe and fun summer on the water.
