MBI investigating officer-involved shooting in Gulfport

On May 2, 2023, at approximately 3:55 p.m., two Officers from the Gulfport Police Department’s Anti-Crime Unit initiated a traffic stop in the area of 2nd Street and Hewes Avenue.

After the officers approached the vehicle, the driver of the vehicle, identified as 22-year-old Corwin Joshua Wilcher of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, produced a handgun, resulting in Officers firing upon Wilcher.

As a result of the incident, Corwin sustained injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where he is currently in critical condition.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has taken over the investigation, and the Biloxi Police Department’s Crime Scene Unit is providing assistance.

The Gulfport Police Officers involved in the incident have been placed on non-enforcement duties, following standard procedures.
