Mayor Gilich Announces Keesler Gate Funding

Biloxi Mayor Andrew ‘FoFo’ Gilich received a round of applause when he announced that $5 million is committed toward a new main entrance for Keesler Air Force Base.
The money comes from the state and will go towards an estimated $37 million new Keesler gate at Division Street. A need for a new gate has been discussed for decades and the mayor believes the city is finally beginning to gain some traction on this issue.
81st Training Wing Commander Colonel Michele Edmonson believes a new gate is crucial to anti-terrorism force protection, but also serving traffic backups on the highway and railroad. “We really want to get that traffic out of the Oak Park neighborhood. This gate allows us to fix all of those problems, close another gate, consolidate a main entry, construct a big visitor’s center and really put our security force members in a better place to maintain the security of the installation.”
Col. Edmondson tells News 25 she has no time frame for construction to begin on the gate, but she does want to see it start as soon as it is fully funded.
