Matt Luke’s Gulfport ties run deep

Ole Miss football is relatively popular in these parts, especially in Gulfport where Head Coach Matt Luke used to strap on the pads as an Admiral.
He says once an admiral, always an admiral as he returned to his old stomping grounds this afternoon.
Luke was one of the keynote speakers at the 55th annual Gulf Coast Coaching Clinic which is being put on by another Gulfport legend, Lindy Callahan. After more than five decades of directing the event, this will be Callahan’s last one and to top it all off, Luke was introduced by his former coach, Ronnie Cuevas, who just so happens to be celebrating a birthday today.
The Gulfport connections run deep for the hometown Rebel who is set to embark on his first season without the interim title. “This is a special time with me being my first year as the head coach and for Coach Callahan, this is his last year. So really a special, special time. A lot of people in there, my high school coach, Coach Cuevas introduced me today and several of my friends are back. So obviously Gulfport is a big part of who I am and Mississippi is very, very important to me. So to be able to come back home and speak is special,” said Luke.
Luke says his Rebels will start spring practice on Tuesday the 27th, culminating with the annual Grove Bowl on April 7th.
