Massive Fire Destroys Pass Christian Home

Flames engulfed a home in Pass Christian this afternoon, completely gutting the house. Fortunately no one was injured.
The flames showed no mercy as they burned this Pass Christian home on Palm Avenue. And while the blaze left owners with virtually nothing, no one was injured.
Pass Christian Fire Chief Dwight Gordon said, “There was a lady home when the fire started to our understanding, but she was out when we got here.”
Firefighters got the call around 2:30 this afternoon and it took them almost an hour and a half to subdue the blaze that neighbors say started in the blink of an eye.
“I looked out the window, I saw flames shoot up out the garage and I saw the car catch on fire. Then I saw after a minute the rest of the roof went up, caught the tree on fire right about it, the flame must have been nearly 50 feet in the air,” said neighbor Simon Lerner.
Fire Chief Gordon tells News 25 that this fire was tougher than most because of how encompassing it was. He said they could see the flames from blocks away and in total it took three departments and over 30 firefighters to battle it. “We had heavy fire showing from the top half of the house and the west side of the house, so we had a defensive attack for quite a while. We actually had to get a lot of fire knocked down from the outside before we could send crews inside,” said Gordon.
Once firefighters were able to gain entry, they were able to stop the flames by around 4 o’clock. While the owners of this home won’t be able to salvage much, at least everyone is safe.
No word yet on what started the fire. Chief Gordon says it will probably take a while to figure out since the flames covered so much of the property.
