Man Shot and Killed in Gulfport

The main question on resident’s minds at the Gulf Mist Apartments: who was the 30-year-old man shot and killed at their complex?
According to Jamie Hatcher, the manager of the complex, Christopher Jerome Smith did not live at Gulf Mist. He often visited a woman who applied to add him to the lease back in September 2015. Hatcher says they denied Smith because of a drug possession arrest from 2012.
He was then barred from the property, but Hatcher tells News 25 neighbors continued to see him visit.
Chief Leonard Papania urges anyone with information to come forward to the Gulfport Police Department as soon as possible. “Policing works if the community works with the police and that’s what we’re looking for. We’ve had other homicides in the city and we’ve solved all of them and it’s our intention to solve this one.”
Gulf Mist Apartment resident Bernadette Cuevas said, “All of these cars and police and fire trucks out here this morning, I didn’t know what in the world was going on because nothing like this ever happened before in nine years I’ve been here.”
Neighbors standing in disbelief, watching investigators and police take away Smith’s body. Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove says the body is being transported to Jackson for an autopsy.
