Man killed after semi-truck flips into Pascagoula River off I-10 Bridge

One man is dead and another is in the hospital recovering after the 18-wheeler they were in flipped into the Pascagoula River this morning.

This happened just before 4 a.m. today on the Interstate 10 Bridge going westbound in Jackson County at the 67 mile marker.

Troopers arrived on scene to find that an 18-wheeler semi and another vehicle were involved in a collision that sent the 18 wheeler over the bridge.

Firefighters were able to get the passenger of the semi out from the water and he is recovering at a local hospital.

The driver of the semi, who has been identified as 47-year-old Taj Latos Sanford of Gulfport, did not make it and officials had to recover his body from the truck that was in the river. State Trooper Cal Robertson said, “We don’t see this very often on I-10. All of the people out here today, all of the agencies worked together to get through this. You have Jackson County, Gautier, the Department of Marine Resources all had their dive crews and boats out here.”

Traffic was backed up for hours as crews worked to clear the scene. MDOT placed a temporary structure on the bridge where it was broken due to this morning’s wreck.

Officials believe the semi-truck was carrying pizza supplies at the time of the accident.
