Man killed in fatal shooting in Gulfport Sunday night
Another shooting in Gulfport leaves a man dead and police with few leads to go on.
The shooting leaves local residents rattled and many too scared to come forward with information that could help solve this case quickly.
Gunfire rang out Sunday night just after 8 p.m. in the 2600 block of Hewes Avenue. Gulfport Police PIO Jason Ducre said, “Once officers arrived on scene they located a 33-year-old male that had been shot multiple times. He was transported to a local area hospital when he later succumbed to his injuries.”
Harrison County Coroner Brian Switzer has identified the victim as 33-year-old Keith Lawson of Gulfport, who died at Memorial Hospital from multiple gunshot wounds.
Carl Johnson doesn’t live in this area, but is working here on Hewes Avenue fixing the community center. “I don’t know the history, but just riding down the road daily I see and hear a lot of different things. I see a lot of in and out traffic, speeding, just a lot of coming and going for a dead end street. We need more police probably on this road.”
News 25 spoke with several residents who live near the site of the shooting while they would not do an interview on camera due to safety concerns, they did say that they believe it is gang related.
Police say they understand that people are scared right now, but they need members of the community to come forward to make sure justice is served. Ducre said, “We know there are a lot of people in the community that know more and we are encouraging those people to come forward.”
Police say the investigation is ongoing and no arrests have been made at this time. “I don’t know how many actually witnessed it, but like I said earlier we know several people know what’s going on and we’re encouraging them to come forward.”
