Make-A-Wish Child Turns on Lights at Jones Park

A child selected by Make-A-Wish flipped the switch this evening in Jones Park, lightning up the sky and kicking off the start of the Harbor Light show.
Six-year-old Asher Griffin was born with a critical heart defect. This time last year, Asher and his family spent most of the holidays in Pennsylvania, helping Asher recover from heart surgery.
Tonight the brave-hearted preschooler stood strongly in front of family, city leaders, and Gulf Coast residents as he flipped the switch to turn on the Christmas lights at Jones Park.
The fun didn’t stop there. The City of Gulfport presented Asher with a couple of early Christmas gifts as well. Anna Griffin, Asher’s mom, said, “We came here last year and it was a very different feeling, but now we’re back and it’s just such a blessing and such a different feeling that we have because we’re more able to enjoy it.”
The Gulfport Harbor Lights Winter Festival starts Friday, November 25th and will run until Sunday, January 1st. Admission is $5 or $40 for a holiday savings pass.
The festival features Santa’s village, an elfie selfie station, arts and crafts vendors, and more.
