Make-A-Wish reveals ‘man cave’ for Coast teenager

Make-A-Wish Mississippi has been making wishes come true for kids battling illness since 1986.

Keeping with that tradition, Make-A-Wish presented a 17-year-old from Waveland with a unique gift.

Edward Besse is only 17, but has had a rough couple of years. Edward hit his head on the school bus one day and had a concussion. After receiving a cat-scan, doctors told him he had a brain tumor. The tumor than became cancerous. After undergoing surgery to remove the tumor, doctors put in a brain shunt, a hollow tube surgically placed in the brain. Edward said, “I woke up. I was in the hospital bed. Felt the thing, I was like there it is. At first, first few weeks, few months, it was weird because constant headaches, just getting used to it.”

The Make-A-Wish Foundation accepted Edward and his first wish was to take a trip out of the country, but COVID hit. “International travel was canceled. So, we couldn’t do that. So, I decided, well my mom went through a list of things I have wanted all my life and club house/ man cave really stuck out for me.”

Edward is cancer-free, but cannot have a regular high school experience because he cannot play any of the sports he loves such as baseball and football.

The man cave allows him to workout, hang with friends, and play video games. Amanda Besse, Edward’s mother, said, “He has been waiting for it. He has been through a lot in his short 17 years, but you know, he is finally excited to just have something that’s his where he can relax and have fun.”

The man cave is equipped with a gaming table and chair, TV, and gaming console. Wish Granter Cindy Kenny said, “We have so much stuff in it. We don’t really know how it’s going to fit in there, but he’s got a futon and he’s got two lofts. So, I mean, they can even sleep in there if they wanted to climb up in the lofts.”

Edward says he is overwhelmed, but grateful. “I am very thankful that this is even possible. I never thought that I would even see this is my own backyard.”
