Long Beach’s Calvin Johnson signs with MGCCC basketball
The Long Beach boys basketball team is 14 wins better than it was a year ago and a big reason why is the senior leadership of Calvin Johnson.
This afternoon, CJ made that hard work pay off, signing a national letter of intent with Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. Johnson leads the Bearcats in rebounds and blocks while ranking second in scoring and assists.
He’s also one of just three players on the team to have played in all 30 games.
Above all, the future Bulldog takes the student part just as seriously as the athlete. “I started playing basketball in ninth grade so ever since then, ever since I stepped on the court I’ve been dreaming that I wanted to have a scholarship so ain’t nothing better than free school. Being able to do what I love, continue my basketball career and staying close to my family. I’m kind of like a momma’s boy, so you know? (College basketball player, Calvin Johnson, how does that sound to you?) Hey, that sounds beautiful.”
The Bearcats return to action at 7 p.m. Tuesday to host the winner of tomorrow night’s game between Hattiesburg and Wingfield in the quarterfinals.
