Locals get ashes to go for Ash Wednesday
Residents on the Coast stopped at the Long Beach Harbor this morning to honor Ash Wednesday.
Pastor David Parr of the Grace Lutheran Church has been doing ashes to go for ten years now. Drivers pulled in to receive prayer and the symbolic cross on their forehead to signify the start of lent which runs until Holy Week.
The pastor shares why he does this every year and the many people he blesses each Ash Wednesday. “Have the opportunity to greet them and share with them the imposition of the ashes and then ask God to bless them. And I always say, remember thou art dust to dust thou shall return. That’s a reminder of our mortality. And so that leads us into a Holy Lent, a time for reflection and self-examination and us seeking to get closer to God.”
Holy Week begins March 24th with Palm Sunday and will conclude on Easter Sunday.
