Local woman celebrates 95th birthday
Today is a very special day for a woman raised on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Arleaner Washington celebrated her 95th birthday. The City of Gulfport not only said happy birthday, but they thanked Mrs. Washington for dedicating her life to serving the community.
It was a day filled with music, food, and celebration as friends, family, and city officials gathered together to celebrate Arleaner Washington’s 95th birthday. “I appreciate them coming out to be with me because I have been here all of my life in north Gulfport. So, I was happy. It makes me feel good to know they have come to be with me today.”
While making it to 95-years-old is impressive in itself, Arleaner has accomplished a lot in her nearly century of living, like being a founding member of the Good Deeds program. Dinah McCann, Arleaner’s daughter, said, “A group of people within the community got together and decided they were gonna do something about the community and they got together and formed this Good Deeds program and they went around helping other people doing everything they could, cutting yards. They formed a fire department. They did everything to get north Gulfport up.”
To honor all she has done for the community, Gulfport City Councilwoman Ella Holmes-Hines presented her with a proclamation. “She is an icon in our community and we are so happy to be here today and we proclamated her today. So, this is her official day on this Tuesday.”
In the midst of all the celebrations, Mrs. Washington shared with us her secret to a happy and long life. “Oh, trusting in God and eating up everything I can get my hands on.”
