Local teachers named state finalists for nation’s highest honor for math and science

The national spotlight is shining on two South Mississippi teachers.

Pass Christian High School math teacher Paige Cobb and Hancock High School science teacher Dr. Shani Bourn are two of four teachers selected from throughout Mississippi as 2019 finalists for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

Cobb tells News 25 if she wins, she just wants to set an example and make her students, teachers, and the City of Pass Christian proud. “It’s great. I’m really thankful and I’m just glad that Pass Christian High School is getting noticed and that my teaching in the classroom is being noticed. I’m just super honored.”

The Mississippi State Board of Education will recognize these finalists later this fall. National winners are typically announced about a year and a half after state finalists have been chosen.
