Local teacher wins American History Award
A teacher at Central and Pass Road Elementary Schools received the Dr. Tom and Betty Lawrence American History Teacher award from the Sons of the American Revolution.
Melanie Davis received this award for her distinguished teaching techniques and her innovative projects used to teach about the American Revolution.
Davis gives her students a variety of ways to learn about the revolution such as cemetery studies on local people who had an impact on the subject.
Davis and her students have worked on getting historical markers placed around the Coast.
Her students also studied the influence the ancient Greeks had on the Americans and their revolution. “I’m really ecstatic and proud. I mean, the fact that they recognized my students’ hard work and the things they’ve been working on is really important for them to see that they, you know, that there’s something at the end for them. You don’t often get to see what’s going on inside the classroom, so for them to be able to see what the kids are working on, what they’re learning about themselves and their community and their country is just wonderful.”
Davis taught her students about the impact that several ethnic groups had on the revolution including several Black American heroes.
