Local Students Awarded 2016 Gulf Coast Band Director’s Association Student Scholarship

BILOXI, Miss. (January 27, 2016) Two local band students were awarded the Gulf Coast Band Director’s Association Student Scholarship, sponsored by McDonald’s owners in Biloxi and Gulfport, following a band clinic and concert at Biloxi Junior High School on Saturday, January 23. Charles Kuhlmann who plays the alto saxophone at Gulfport High School and Kaitlyn Borsi who plays the flute at D’Iberville High School were each awarded a $1,000 college scholarship. In addition, their respective high schools each received $1,000 to go toward their band program.
Tryouts were held January 21 and those selected were part of the Gulf Coast Band Director’s Association Band Clinic. Judges for the event included Standland, Wes Dykes and William Peterson. A final concert was held at Biloxi Junior High School on Saturday evening, with an awards ceremony that followed.
“We are always amazed at the level of talent our local students display year after year,” said Travis Coakley, Biloxi Public School District Fine & Performing Arts Director. “They continue to raise the bar and we are pleased to see them rewarded for their hard work and dedication.”
About the Biloxi-Gulfport McDonald’s Co-Op
The Biloxi-Gulfport McDonald’s co-op is comprised of 26 locations along the Mississippi Gulf Coast and is represented by 7 local owners. Each year the co-op supports the Ronald McDonald House, local schools and other local organizations through monetary contributions and continual support of local events.
