Local Post Offices Brace for Busy Holiday Season

The Gulfport post office is the second largest facility in the state, meaning they have countless packages to deliver this holiday season.

To keep mail carriers from working long hours, the north Gulfport, north Biloxi, Pascagoula, and Ocean Springs post offices are spreading out the large loads by delivering packages to residents on Sundays, meaning south Mississippians in those areas will receive mail seven days a week until Christmas arrives.

Larry Delahunt, Gulfport Post Master, says, “Obviously, we’ve had growth in parcel business which is good, and we’ve had a 15% increase here so far, and we’re expecting a 15 to 20% increase over last year, so Sunday delivery will help us get our carriers off the streets earlier on Mondays so it’s not quite as heavy.”

According to the post master, online shopping is becoming more popular and has helped the postal service make a comeback.
