Local nurse helping COVID-19 patients in Texas
A local nurse is fighting on the front lines of COVID-19 in Texas.
Gulfport resident Lina Jones aids hospitals overwhelmed with COVID-19 patients in McAllen, Texas. She works on the rapid response team for Fresenius Kidney Care, caring for patients on dialysis.
Lina is currently volunteering in Texas hospitals treating COVID-19 patients that have developed acute kidney injury. She has been working with the patients since the start of the pandemic in March, originally working in Georgia.
Lina has been living in Gulfport with her husband Tracy, a Navy veteran, and their two children for the past fifteen years.
Despite uprooting herself to provide support to a COVID-19 hotspot in Texas, Lina does not consider herself a hero. “They needed help so I’m just doing what everybody is doing in the country. All the nurses in the country are doing the same thing. They’re just stepping up. So far it’s been an overwhelming experience. It’s good, it’s bad, it’s a little bit of everything.”
As of now, Lina has no set return date to Gulfport, but she’s communicating with friends and loved ones from Gulfport via Facetime.
Lina encourages everyone to “please social distance, wash your hands and wear a mask.”
