Local Leaders Speak on Transgender Lift in Boy Scouts
Thousands across the nation continue to celebrate the landmark decision to allow transgender boys to join the Boy Scouts of America.
Council CEO for the Pine Burr area Casey Norwood says the announcement is not a policy change, but more so just a change in procedure. Previously if a scout had a question about a potential member’s gender they relied on the individual’s birth certificate to determine eligibility.
Now scouts will trust whatever gender is marked on the application. “We’re going to handle issues as they come up, but the policy did not change. I can tell you that all of the chartering organizations still have the right to approve all membership, youth and adult, and that is something that is not a change,” said Norwood.
In recent years, the scouts lifted their ban on openly gay youth participating and allowed gay adults to serve as leaders.
