Local doctor indicted on 16 counts related to fraud scheme

A Biloxi physician is now facing charges for his role in a multi-million dollar scheme to defraud health care benefit program Tricare.
Albert Diaz of Ocean Springs was charged Wednesday in a 16 count indictment in the southern district of Mississippi. Some of those charges include conspiracy to commit health care fraud, wire fraud, and conspiracy to distribute and dispense a controlled substance. Tricare serves our nation’s military, veterans, and their respective family members.
U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Mississippi Mike Hurst said, “It’s incredibly important because they’re defrauding not only Tricare, the healthcare program that supplies our military, they’re defrauding our military. When you prescribe drugs that you don’t see patients, that you ask for reimbursements for the federal government, this hurts not just us as citizens, it hurts folks on the front lines.”
If convicted, Diaz faces 305 years in jail and fines up to $7.5 million. His initial court appearance is scheduled for October 31st.
