Local doctor helps feed families for Thanksgiving

On his 70th birthday, Dr. David Sawyer and his wife decided to volunteer and sponsor Extend a Hand, Help a Friend’s Thanksgiving Dinner Box Giveaway.

Twenty box dinner deliveries were made yesterday and the remaining 80 are set to go into homes today.

Last year, Extend a Hand, Help a Friend only distributed turkeys during their holiday giveaway, but now they’re giving a full thanksgiving meal including cake and icing, green beans, corn, peas, a box of stuffing, a turkey, and spaghetti meal will be given out.

Between 100 and 150 registered people can expect to receive a free meal. Volunteer Karen Sawyer said, “I got in touch with Jeffrey Hulum and we wanted to do something special for my husband’s birthday. I knew he could come up with the best way to let us do what we can for the community. Jeffrey just put the wheels in motion. So, we’re thankful for everybody on the Coast and we’re certainly thankful for Extend a Hand, Help a Friend.”

Continued partnerships with Extra Table out of Hattiesburg, the City of Gulfport, Climb CDC, and Morning Star Church also helped make this possible.
